MANILA: The Philippine House justice committee on Wednesday ruled that two impeachment complaints against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. lacked substance, effectively dismissing allegations of corruption, constitutional violations and betrayal of public trust.
After three days of deliberations, the committee overwhelmingly found the complaints—filed separately by a lawyer and a group of activists—to be without merit. Marcos, who is midway through his term, has denied all allegations.
Committee chair Gerville Luistro said a report would be submitted to the House plenary next week, where lawmakers may either uphold or overturn the findings. The House is dominated by allies of the president. For impeachment to proceed, support from at least one-third of the chamber would be required.
