Saudi Arabia, Germany Partner to Build Green Ammonia Export Corridor

03/02/2026

RIYADH: Saudi energy company Acwa has signed a memorandum of understanding with Germany’s Energie Baden-Württemberg AG (EnBW), Rostock Port and Verbundnetz Gas AG (VNG) to develop a green ammonia export corridor linking the Kingdom to Germany. The agreement, witnessed by Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman and Germany’s Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Katherina Reiche, will see green ammonia shipped from Acwa’s planned production hub in Yanbu to Germany’s Rostock Port. There, VNG will convert the ammonia into green hydrogen for injection into Germany’s national energy network. The project supports Acwa’s ambition to become a global leader in renewable energy and aligns with Europe’s push to decarbonize hard-to-abate industries. Acwa, with EnBW’s support, is leading development of the Yanbu green hydrogen and ammonia facility, which is scheduled to begin commercial operations in 2030. EnBW will act as an offtaker and manage logistics to Rostock, while the port will serve as the main entry point for the fuel. VNG is advancing plans to build an ammonia cracker near the port to supply hydrogen to German customers. The agreement comes amid broader Saudi-German discussions on strengthening economic cooperation, including potential partnerships in industry and mining, as the Kingdom seeks to attract significant foreign investment under its long-term economic strategy.
